Pride does us all in

Business author Jim Collins tells the story of a time he went to speak at a conference of American leaders. He asked the question – Is America renewing its greatness or is it in danger of falling from great to good? After some lively debate, the conference took a break and a CEO of a major American company came over to Collins and said he had been trying to apply the question to his own company. He said, “We’ve had tremendous success in recent years, and I worry about that. So, what I want to know is, how would you know?” This CEO went on to explain, “When you are at the top of the world, the most powerful nation on Earth, the most successful company in your industry, the best player in your game, you very power and success might cover up the fact that you’re already on the path to decline. So, how would you know?”

Collins was so intrigued by the question, he lead his research team to study how the powerful fall. He wrote a book called How the Mighty Fall in which  he reveals the results of his research. He reveals that there are five stages companies go through as they spiral down. Stage # 1 – Hubris born of success. Good old fashioned pride.

Collin’s research is simply another example of what the ancient wisdom has already handed down:

Proverbs 16:18 “Pride comes before destruction and an arrogant spirit before a fall.”

Proverbs 18:12 “Before his downfall a man’s heart is proud…”
